In the simplest sense, the supply chain is a process umbrella under which products are created and delivered to customers. In a nutshell, Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the coordination of material, information, and financial flows between and among all participating enterprises.
The central objective of this course is to develop skills at analyzing and synthesizing solutions to supply chain issues from the senior managers perspective. Specific theoretical / mathematical concepts will be incorporated, when appropriate, to lend context to more strategic issues. In addition, this course will specifically address a number of technology enablers of supply chain management including ERP and SCM applications, Web-centric marketplaces, and RFID tags. Since the range of potential SCM issues is quite extensive and a mini-semester is relatively short period of time, we will concentrate primarily on those issues with particular relevance to future executives and encapsulate the most contemporary areas of the discipline.
Key topics for the course will include:
* New Product Design for Operational Effectiveness
* The Production Process: Lean Manufacturing, Inventory and Quality
* Outsourcing
* The Role of Technology and Information in SCM
* The Evolution and Impact of the Web on Global Supply Chains
* 21st Century Supply Chains: Emerging Themes
