Description: This course allows students to explore topics in strategy of interest to them, based on extensions of material introduced in 45-971. Through discussions with the instructor students select a topic to study in depth; the course then consists of meetings between students and the instructor on their chosen topic. Past topics include corporate restructuring, management of technological change, innovating in large economies-of-scale-driven organizations, strategies for entertainment industries, fast-cycle management, the fashions of strategy, how to make strategic planning long-term in nature, and developing methods for incorporating real options pricing in strategic thinking. The course encourages a working relationship with the instructor so course enrollment is typically limited to 3-4 topics with working groups of 2-4 students each. Student eligibility is based on the quality and feasibility of topics considered and performance in 45-971. Students are encouraged to approach the instructor with topic ideas prior to the course.
